Malta to Sicily ferry: Everything you need to know

Are you planning another destination after Malta? You can take from Malta to Sicily ferry and experience a great adventure.
Getting views of Valletta’s famous Great Harbour is priceless, and the ferry to Sicily doesn’t take long.
The good news is you can also make a day trip and use the Sicily to Malta ferry.

We took one of the Sicily ferries. The Valletta Pozzallo route, in both directions, so we can help you with everything you need to know.

The fastest ferry duration between Malta and Sicily is 1 hour 45 minutes.

Note: For the Valletta to Catania route, you must take a ferry from Valletta to Pozzallo and then use a coach transfer to Catania.

Valletta – Pozzallo is 1h 45min
Valletta – Catania is 4h 15min (Including coach from Pozzallo to Catania)

Malta and Sicily are 127 km away by the sea.
The ferry distance between Valletta and Pozzallo is 57 nautical miles (105km) which is also the fastest ferry journey.

Malta to Sicily ferry cost depends on the vehicle type, number of passengers, or season.
The best is to book a ticket in advance for the best prices. We used Direct Ferries to book our tickets.

Valletta to Pozzalo from 70€ for a foot passenger.
Valletta to Catania from 90€ for a foot passenger. (Bus ticket between Pozzallo and Catania is included).

The bicycles are free of charge but you must make a booking of the bicycle when making your reservation.

Thanks to the good connection between Malta and Sicily, you can travel outside the island for a day or two or continue your journey via Sicily.

Foot Passengers should check in at least 1 hour before departure time.

The journey from Malta to Catania goes only via Pozzallo.
Some of the ferry rides have coach transfers from Pozzallo port to Catania port or vice versa by Virtu Ferries.

The first ferry + coach from Valletta goes at 05:00 and the last at 18:00
The first coach + ferry from Catania goes at 15:00 and the last at 18:30
The journey time is 4h 15min.
There are about 3 sails per day one way. Depends on the season.

We used the Malta Sicily ferry. Then we continued by train from Pozzallo to Syracuse where you can take another train to Catania.
We enjoyed an unusual ride on a small local train, but we had to wait for several hours.
If your visit to Malta and Sicily is limited by time, the coach transfers to Catania will be a better option for you.

This passenger/car ferry can carry up to 900 passengers. There are 6 air-conditioned lounges, in good weather you can also use the outdoor decks with enough space for sitting.
There are also small shops and snack bars on board.

The Malta to Sicily ferry can carry 167 vehicles and 23 trailers or other heavy vehicles.

Yes, you can because there is a lot to see in Sicily, it is definitely worth a day or even more for a visit. There is a ferry service between Malta and Sicily so why not use it?

Is there a direct ferry from Malta to Sicily?
There are two ferry routes between Malta and Sicily.
Virtu Ferries operates from Valletta to Pozzallo and Valletta to Catania, however, on this route, you must take a ferry to Pozzallo then you have a coach transfer to Catania by Virtu Ferries.
